Recently a clinical study was recently completed by Robert DiSilvestro of
Ohio State University, which compared the effects of whey protein to soy
on muscle tissue breakdown during exercise in healthy adult males. Dr. DiSilvestro
published his findings in the Journal of Nutraceuticals, Functional and Medical
Foods (volume 3, 2000, pages 33-42). The study concluded that supplementing
your diet with whey protein alone could actually cause above normal amounts
of muscle breakdown during exercise. Additionally, the now famous Boire study,
published in the December, 1997 Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences
(Volume 94, pages 14930-14935) concluded that supplementing with micellar
casein significantly prevented the breakdown of muscle tissue. While whey
protein may increase protein synthesis to a very high degree, higher than
casein, scientists are now recognizing that micellar casein is much more
important in preventing muscle breakdown. In fact, additional research is
demonstrating that the slow and sustained release of amino acids from micellar
casein can cause a “timed release” trickle of amino acids into the bloodstream
which can last for as many as 7 full hours after ingestion.
